Det var med en k?nsla av vild gl?dje jag ?terv?nde fr?n Nordbanans station, sedan jag d?r avl?mnat min lilla hustru, vilken skulle fara till v?rt barn, som insjuknat i fj?rran land. Fullbordat var allts? offret av mitt hj?rta! V?ra avskedsord: N?r ses vi igen? -- Snart! ?terlj?do ?nnu s?som osanningar, vilkas bedr?glighet man icke vill tillst? f?r sig; en aning sade mig, att det var f?r alltid vi nu hade skilts. Detta farv?l, som vi utbytte i november m?nad 1894, blev verkligen ocks? det sista, ty till denna stund, i maj 1897, har jag ?nnu icke ?tersett min k?ra hustru.
N?r jag hunnit till Caf? de la R?gence, slog jag mig ned vid det bord, d?r jag f?rut brukat sitta med min hustru, min vackra f?ngvaktarinna, som dag och natt spionerade p? min sj?l, gissade till mina hemliga tankar, bevakade mina id?ers lopp, svartsjukt iakttog min andes str?van mot det ok?nda.
