N'um dos seus quartos ha um piano, onde vi outras tocando, em quanto ella arredada de tudo e de todos estava entregue apenas ? sua inquieta phantasia. ? uma mulher esbelta, opulenta de f?rmas, lembrando as feiticeiras do Oriente; uma d'essas organisa??es colossaes como as que a terra produzia quando era nova e que absorviam em si umas poucas de existencias!...

As enfermeiras tratam de a tranquillisar, quando observam que com o ver visitas principie a agitar-se; encostam mais a porta do quarto: e continuam caminhando gravemente, com o seu ar impenetravel; impenetravel ao ponto de se estar sempre em duvida ao ver o olhar vago d'ellas se tambem ser?o...--se as doentes tambem ser?o enfermeiras?

Uma, aqui, sem fazer caso do delirio que vae em roda d'ella n?o faz sen?o costurar; coser, coser, coser; e gritam, e pulam, e dan?am, e ralham, e atropelam-a, e ella vae costurando, cosendo, cosendo, tranquillamente, prudentemente, como se f?ra o sol no meio da noite, a ac??o no meio da id?a, a ras?o no meio da loucura!

Outra falla s?sinha, e ri. De que est? a fallar sempre? De que est? sempre a rir? Est? a rir das coisas, e a fallar de um certo, por causa de quem veiu a observar que a maior parte dos amantes ficariam contrariados com o possuir para sempre e sem partilhas o objecto da sua adora??o; e que, se se dirigem mais homenagens ?s casadas do que ?s solteiras, ? porque o marido ? um obstaculo que ninguem supprime, e d?, por isso mesmo, a melhor latitude a protestos de dedica??o. Est? ? janella a olhar para os campos e a farejar tormenta em tudo--no voejar dos passaros, na pressa das formigas... Queixa-se de ter conhecido a vida, ? sua custa;--a peor maneira de conhecer as coisas. ?s vezes n?o ? segura, e quando se exalta vae dando bofetadas em quem apanha; previnem-me disto.
